Why Are You an Atheist?

People sometimes ask me why I'm an atheist. I think the better question might be "why aren't you?" I'm an atheist because I must always ask questions. I may not always get answers to those questions, but just because I don't have the answer, I don't think I should insert god into the hole. I've yet to hear a good definition of god. I could insert my toaster into that gap for all the difference it makes, at least I know what my toaster looks like, and what it does.

I also need to focus on things I -can- get answers to. Unless a deity in some form decides to step into the room and introduce him/her/itself to me, or gives some sort of tangible proof that s/he/it exists, I'm never going to know. And since I don't acknowledge a deity, I must be responsible for my own actions. I must be philanthropic for my own sake. Work to improve my own life. I don't have to sit around and implore someone to help me.

Religion has some great points. Thing is though, all their good points are secular. Form groups of like minded people, and support each other, but also help those in need. Don't kill people or take things that don't belong to you. Be fruitful and multiply might apply, but I'd take that with a grain of salt. Have a kid or two if you want. Just keep in mind that it's a vagina, not a clown car.

Seriously, folks.

Why not just take all those great points, and ditch the silly ritual? Do you -really- need to eat a cracker, or starve yourself, or kiss a rock, or spend thousands of dollars to meet your intergalatic overlord, Xenu? You know what I do on sunday mornings? I sleep in. It's really nice, and I don't have to listen to some guy with a pulpit in front of him telling me I'm a sinner.
